Swim The first half of the season has gone well. We are 4-1. While we haven't faced overly difficult teams, our swimmers are improving each meet. To date, we have one individual qualified for Sectionals and our Girls Medley Relay has qualified for Sectionals. We have several other swimmers right on the edge of qualifying as well. Our newer swimmers are improving at a tremendous rate and are contributing to our success. This is my 3rd season with the team. Gianna Guerriero has qualified for Sectionals in the 100 Free. Our Girls 200 Medley Relay has qualified for Sectionals. (Saraellen Mathewson, Gianna Guerriero, Emma Brown and Madeline Cleary.) Evan O'Brien, Madeline Cleary and Emma Brown are very close to qualifying for individual events at Sectionals. Gianna is also close to qualifying for additional events at Sectionals. Evan O'Brien broke his own school record in the 100 Butterfly. The heavy teams are coming up and we will be tested. Bishop Stang has been a VERY tight meet the last 2 years and we expect nothing different this year. Spellman could also bring some speed against us. Our meets against Cohasset and Bishop Feehan are teams that more than double ours and are loaded with speed, but they will provide excellent competition and hopefully drive us to Sectional and/or State qualifying times. I expect our team to do well at the CCL Championship.
Boys basketball The season has gotten off to a great start with us being 9-0 and 4-0 in the CCL for the boys basketball team.
From Coach Holden; “ This is my 5th season being back to coach here at AWHS (8th season overall) Our highlights would be picking up some really good wins vs Spellman and Feehan on the road and beating BLA here at home. As well as winning the Titan Holiday Classic, beating a tough Duxbury team in the final. The 9-0 start has propelled us to a top 10 ranking in the state (#9) Josh Campbell leads our team in scoring and rebounding and broke out vs Feehan with a 36 point performance. Tristan Rodrigues has provided tenacious defense as well as scoring, pouring in a career high of 34 points, with 8 3-pointers vs BLA. Lorenzo Jackson has been consistently good on both offense and defense and is one of our top scorers and defenders. A huge strength for our team is our depth, playing 9 guys consistently, with Charlie Conners, Andre Espaillat, Jack Solomon, Nate Pelton, Tommy McDonagh and Julian Sustache all making solid contributions on both ends of the floor throughout the young season.Brendan Foster will be a nice addition when he returns from injury. Our bench, Brendan Conroy, Colin Waldron, Mike Folan, Chris Swirbalus and Seth Pinckombe continue to work hard every day in practice and have played an important role in our team success. Although we have had a good start, we have areas that still need to improve in order for us to reach our goals. Qualifying for the state tournament, having a good power ranking and contending for the CCL league title are our top goals at this point.”
The current power ranking for boys basketball is Division 3: ranked #1.
Girls Basketball The Girls basketball team has started off better than expected with a 7-2 record in the first half of the season.
From the coach; “This resilient group has gotten off to a good start against some tough competition. Coach Mahoney, in his 9th year as head coach, believes the future is bright for this team. The team has steadily improved and is focused on a very tough schedule in the second half of the season. In the second half of the schedule they will be playing some of the top teams in the state and are looking forward to the challenge. Some of the early season highlights include a 20 point game for Senior Elise Carter vs Notre Dame, a 19 point 11 rebound game for Senior Angie Coletti against Arlington Catholic and a 13 point and 14 rebound game for Eliana Jackson vs Scituate. Mia Porter and Eliana Jackson have been key contributors on the defensive end. Sophomore Claire O'Keefe and 8th grader Abigail Burrell also scored their first varsity points this year vs Cardinal Spellman”.
The current power rankings for the girls basketball team is Division 3: ranked #7
Girls Hockey Doug Nolan is in his 2nd year as a head coach for the girls hockey team at Archbishop Williams.
The Lady Bishops are off to a good start to the 2022-2023 season with a record of 7-0-1 after 8 games. They are currently ranked number 1 in Division 2.
A highlight of the year so far has been back to back wins against previously unbeaten and Number 1 ranked Sandwich. After 8 games the Bishop's TEAM defense and strong goaltending have only allowed 7 goals against. The scoring has been spread out over two lines. Leading the way has been Senior Captain Grace Mottau and Senior transfer Maggie Lynch. The defense led by Abby Dunn and Evelyn Lacey has only let up 7 goals in 8 games.
Second year head coach Doug Nolan is very excited about the strong schedule that the Lady Bishops will face in the second half of the year. The Girls will be tested in the second half with Division 1 and Division 2 powerhouse teams like St Marys, Notre Dame and Duxbury on the schedule the girls will be tested and we can see where we are at going into the tournament. The girls are looking to build off last year's success with a heartbreaking quarterfinal loss to Natick last year. We don’t want to look too far ahead but our goal this year is to take the next step.
Boys hockey Chris Cunningham is in his 2nd year as boys hockey coach.
At 6-4, the Bishop's boys hockey team is working everyday on becoming a better team. We have shown some areas of great potential but we are unsatisfied with our performance, so far.
A highlight of the season so far for the boys was playing at Fenway Park on January 10th. It was an amazing once in a lifetime experience for the team. We won the exhibition scrimmage game 6-1, against Bishop Fenwick.
For the second half of the season, we are hungry to prove ourselves. "Doesn't matter, get better" mentality. The boys hockey team is looking to become more consistent and live up to the identity of a relentlessly hard-working team that is tough to play against in all areas of the ice. In mid-February we will play several of the top Division I teams in the state. The Bishops will be battle tested and prepared for a playoff run.
